September 8, 2013, Siargao Island, Philippines:  The Asian Surfing Championships in cooperation with the Philippine Surfing Federation is proud to announce the 19th annual Siargao International Surfing Cup at Cloud 9 on Siargao Island, which will take place from September 23-29, as a 6-star ASC sanctioned Men’s and Women’s event with double prize money for the Men’s Open Division.

Set in the idyllic tropical island of Siargao on the western edge of the Philippines, Cloud 9 is the iconic barreling righthander that has hosted numerous professional surfing competitions over the years with top international surfers such as Jamie O’Brien (HAW), Wade Goodall (AUS), Laurie Towner (AUS), and Mikala Jones (HAW), as well as top Asian surfers like Raditya Rondi (INA), Made “Bol” Adi Putra (INA), Lee Wilson (INA), and Marlon Gerber (INA).

With a first place cash prize of $5,000 USD up for grabs in the Men’s Open and $2,500 USD in the Women’s Open, plus valuable ASC championship points in this the 6th stop of the 2013 ASC tour season, the event is sure to attract the Asian regions best male and female surfers as well as some exciting international free surfers.

Differing from previous events held at Cloud 9, this year will see both Men’s and Women’s Divisions during the same 7-day waiting period.  Last year the ASC sanctioned their first-ever event in the Philippines, the Roxy Siargao International Surfing Cup at Cloud 9 from May 1-4, 2012, whichwas won by local Nilbie Blancada and included Australia’s Philippa Anderson and Indonesia’s ASC Women’s Champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea.

Bali’s Marlon Gerber is stoked about returning to Cloud 9, saying, “I love that wave, and the whole vibe of the island.   With the scenery, the locals, the set up, and such a fun wave, I can’t wait to get there and get barreled.  And with 5 grand cash up for grabs in the contest, it’s that much better!”

ASC President Tipi Jabrik is delighted to be joining with the PSF to add another event to the 2013 ASC tour schedule, and grateful to Mayor Rusillion and the other sponsors for putting on the event as well as inviting the ASC to participate.  “Speaking for the ASC and for our surfers, we couldn’t be happier coming to Siargao Island for this competition” said Jabrik. “I’ve surfed and competed at Cloud 9 several times myself so I know what a special place it is, so to be able to bring our ASC men and women surfers here for the 6th stop of our ASC tour is very exciting.  After the success of last year’s Roxy Siargao Cup we’re really looking forward to this event, getting some great waves, running an epic contest, and having a great time on the island. Thanks to Mayor Rusillion, the PSF, and all the sponsors for making this possible,” he concluded.

Contest Director Gerry Degan, owner of the Sagana Resort, has been involved in the event for years now, had this to say.  “This event, which is now in its 19th year, was the vision of General Luna Mayor Jaime Rusillion, who still supports the event to this day. With the help of Governor Matugas, Congressman Matugas, and the Department of Tourism the event has evolved into a true international event that will undoubtedly grow into one of the premier surfing contests in Asia,” said Degan.

He went on to add, “With this future in mind it is a huge bonus to link up with the Asian Surfing Championship tour for this year’s event. To get the best Asian surfers here to Cloud 9 for both a men’s and women’s 6 star event is a huge coup for us here in the local surfing community, the organizers, and a financial boon for the local tourism industry.  We’re keeping our fingers crossed for great waves and a fruitful relationship between us here in the Philippines, the ASC and all the partners and sponsors.”

The 19th Annual Siargao Surfing Cup is sponsored by the Philippines Department of Tourism, the Province of Surigao Del Norte (Governor Sol F. Matugas), House of Representatives - First District of Surigao del Norte (Congressman Francisco T. Matugas) the Municipality of General Luna (Mayor Jaime P. Rusillion), Cloud 9 Boardriders, Surf Angels, Reef Beach Houses, San Miguel Brewery Inc., Stoked Inc, Fluidsurf, Rip Curl, Siargao Bleu Resort, Sagana Resort, The Boardwalk, Ocean 101, and DT General Merchandise, with media support by TV 5 and My Life On Board, organized by the Philippine Surfing Federation and sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championships.

Travel Detail Document

Flights
Since there are few direct international flights into Cebu , the gateway city to Siargao Island, most airlines will route you through Manila and on to Cebu, where there is just one option to fly to Siargao Island and that is on Cebu Pacific.
Remember that in Manila there are 3 terminals so keep that in mind if you are taking different airlines on the same itinerary, as you may have to take your baggage from one to the other when transiting.
Common international carriers to check coming into Manila and/or Cebu:

  • Cebu Pacific Airlines
  • Philippine Airlines
  • Air Asia
  • Jetstar
  • Tiger Airways
  • Malaysia Airlines

Prices start at about $450 USD and go up, depending upon luggage, seats, and whatever extra charges you add.  Most don’t include an allowance for 20-30 kgs and sports equipment, so double check that when you are booking.

Cebu to Siargao Island – Cebu Pacific
There are now daily flights to Siargao from Cebu, with flights leaving on Monday, Wednesday Friday, and Sunday at 10:20 am, at 13:45 on Tuesday, and at 15:10 on Saturday.
·     Alternatively there is a direct flight to Surigao everyday with the same airline then a connecting ferry to Siargao if you want to take the scenic route.
·     If bookings are made online please check for the sporting equipment box so that the boards won’t be charged at crazy rates at the airport.

A recent check of a return flight Cebu-Siargao-Cebu including 20kgs of luggage came through at $176 USD. It can be more or less depending on the timing, promo offers, etc.

If accommodations in Cebu are required, we suggest the Cebu Parklane International Hotel.  Rates are 2,500 pesos (about $60 USD) per night for a twin share, 2,300 pesos for a single.  Contact dferrer@parklanehotel.com.ph.  They can also arrange airport transfers for 1,900 pesos for 4 passengers.
